The parts of the exam vary according to the certificate. The most basic levels, such as KET (Key English Test) and PET (Preliminary English Test), consist of three parts, while the more advanced levels, such as First Certificate, Advanced and Proficiency, consist of four parts. It is important to note that the basic certificates do not include the Use of English test, which is often considered one of the most difficult tests for students.
The Key English Test is the most basic test and shows that you can communicate in simple situations. This certificate is mainly designed for schools.
This is an intermediate level test which assesses the student's use of English in everyday situations. Candidates who obtain this certificate demonstrate skills in reading books and simple texts, as well as taking notes in a lecture or meeting.
This is the first Cambridge certificate considered to be academic and professional in the Cambridge scale of examinations. The First Certificate is an upper-intermediate or B2 exam according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages and is one of the most popular exams.
This exam has become very popular in recent years. It is an advanced level exam which demonstrates that the student has exceptional communication skills in English. It is a fairly difficult exam which requires thorough preparation covering all language skills.
This certificate represents the highest level of the Cambridge exams and demonstrates a very high level of proficiency in English. It requires considerable effort in preparation. If you have not previously taken the Advanced, it is not recommended to jump straight to the Proficiency.
